I made this drawing/design in 2024 for Metallica. As a longtime fan of the band and former tour-mate of theirs I’ve been extremely fortunate over the years to have made several designs for them. With this image I indulged in a desire to make a design in the classic tradition of 80s/90s Pushead, thrash and skate designs, using imagery and a color-palette that I associate with that era. In ’88 or ’89 as a young teenager growing up in rural Virginia in I vividly remember walking home from middle school one afternoon and seeing a group of older kids wearing the “Shortest Straw” “Harvester of Sorrow” and “Tips Her Scales” Pushead designs. It was an incredibly pivotal moment for me as creative kid who loved hard music and imagery, and was probably the first time I had a such a keen awareness of the symbiotic relationship between visual arts and music. I knew then that I wanted to some part of that world.
